Disability benefits serve to alleviate the challenges associated with living under limitations. The U.S. Social Security Administration administers disability benefits through two main programs: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a federal initiative that provides monthly payments to individuals who have a work history, paid Social Security taxes, and are now facing disabilities that significantly impede their ability to work.
To qualify for SSDI, two essential criteria must be met:
- Insurance Requirement: Individuals must have worked long enough to be covered by SSDI.
- Disability Standards: The disability determination process assesses five key factors to ascertain whether the individual meets Social Security’s standards for disability.
Meeting both these requirements is essential for eligibility. Additionally, there are alternative situations in which individuals may receive similar benefits:
- Adults with disabilities that commenced before turning 22 may be eligible for Childhood Disability Benefits (CDB).
- Individuals under the age of 19 might qualify for child’s benefits if one of their parents receives SSDI or Social Security retirement benefits, or if a parent has passed away, without the need for the child to have a disability.
- Spouses or ex-spouses of those eligible for SSDI or Social Security retirement benefits may be eligible for Disabled Widow(er) benefits.
The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs, while distinct, are both administered by the Social Security Administration. Only individuals meeting specific medical criteria for a disability may qualify for benefits under either program.
Social Security Disability Insurance provides benefits to those who are “insured,” indicating they have worked sufficiently and paid Social Security taxes. On the other hand, Supplemental Security Income offers benefits based on financial need.
